York Grotto

York, PA

Based in York County, Pennsylvania, the York Grotto is a local chapter (an Internal Organization) of the National Speleological Society (NSS). We are committed to the study, enjoyment and preservation of caves through fellowship and active learning. Members receive The York Grotto News newsletter and a monthly information bulletin called The PoopSheet. We conduct hands-on training and field trips to orient new members to the equipment, safety procedures, methods and precautions necessary for the successful exploration and conservation of these limited and fragile natural resources. We have a mobile library of cave related books and publications, maps, skilled and knowledgeable members and resources for education and rescue efforts. Please join us for a meeting at 7:30 p.m. on the last Tuesday of each month, except August (annual Summer Picnic), and December (annual Holiday Party), in the banquet room of Jackie B's Restaurant, located at 300 Mulberry St. in York, Pa. Our meetings, which always begin with a program, are open to anyone interested in caving. Previous programs have included videos on "Single Rope Ascending Systems," "The History of Vertical Caving," "Season of the Bat," and "Alexander Cave," DVDs like "Amazing Caves," and "Expeditions To The Edge: Cave Flood," presentations on Cave Diving, First Aid & CPR, Cave Surveying, Prusik Knot Tying (for ascending ropes), and multi-media reports on bats, Venture Crew Caving, York Grotto members  trips, expeditions and caving related activities such as orienteering and mapping.
